Biography

Soprano Demetra Adams is a classical performing artist and educator. 

American soprano Demetra Adams hails from Greek and Italian ancestry. Last season, she appeared in the North American première of Roberto Scarcella Perino's opera Furiosus at Merkin Concert Hall in NYC. She regularly sings with a professional quartet at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Manhattan.

 

Notable appearances include soprano soloist in Mozart’s Solemn Vespers with The Nubian Conservatory Choir and Orchestra, Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte with dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, Gertrude in Hansel and Gretel with New York Lyric Opera Theatre and soprano soloist in Heinrich Schütz’s Musikalishe Exequien at Park Avenue Christian Church. 

In Miami, she recorded excerpts of Vita Hildegardis, an opera about the life of Hildegard von Bingen, by award winning composer Adalberto Yanes.                                                                          

She performed the title role in Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella with New York City Opera’s Educational Tour and soprano soloist in Handel’s The Anthem on the Peace with the Metropolitan Greek Chorale. She also appeared in recital in New York City and in reading of a newly adapted rendering of The Orphan Singer with Making Books Sing.

Previously, she appeared in concert at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts’ Venetian Theater. As one of Bel Canto at Caramoor’s Young Vocal Artists, Ms. Adams performed in a scene from Maria Stuarda, singing the title role, and on a program of Donizetti’s songs and chamber music written for Vienna and Paris.

Beginning her career singing the mezzo-soprano repertory, she performed the roles of Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Mercédès in Carmen, Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Inez in Il trovatore, Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana, Kate in Pirates of Penzance, Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, Bianca in La Rondine and La Sorella Infermiera in Suor Angelica. Ms. Adams has appeared with opera companies across the United States including Florida Grand Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera Iowa, Natchez Opera, Sarasota Opera, Virginia Opera and Opera Company of Brooklyn, among others.

Ms. Adams frequently collaborates with composers and has been involved in several world première productions, originating roles in Seymour Barab’s The Pied Piper of Hamelin at Virginia Opera and Robert Ashley’s Balseros at Florida Grand Opera. She originated the role of The Lovely Daughter in composer Josh Ollswang’s opera Juniper Tree. With the New York Composer’s Circle, she performed excerpts from Eugene McBride’s forthcoming opera On Burning Ground, based on the memoir of a holocaust survivor.

A proud advocate of children’s education in art and music, Ms. Adams has had the opportunity to reach thousands of children and young adults through master classes, educational workshops and children’s opera performances while working with Virginia Opera, Florida Grand Opera and Des Moines Metro Opera.

She is the winner of numerous awards including the Bel Canto Opera Competition, Josephine LiPuma Vocal Competition, Finalist in the New Jersey Alliance of Performing Artists Vocal Competition, Margaret Hillis Study Grant and Manhattan School of Music Merit Scholarship.

Her training includes apprenticeships with Florida Grand Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Virginia Opera and Sarasota Opera. At the invitation of noted conductor Alberto Zedda, she attended the Accademia Rossiniana, a theoretical and performance seminar dedicated to bel canto opera. Following the Accademia, she performed in a concert of Rossinian highlights at the Teatro Sperimentale in Rossini’s birthtown of Pesaro, Italy and home of the Rossini Opera Festival.

 

Ms. Adams holds a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University, and lives in New York City.
